There are different correlations in which the word Reiki is used.
The word itself comes from the Japanese language. It is put together from the characters REI, which means cosmos/universe, and KI (the vital force).
The Reiki symbol looks like this:

So basically Reiki is just another name for the vital energy that surrounds and permeates all living beings.
In other languages this energy is called Chi, Xi, Ki, Prana, Vital Force, or Lebenskraft (I even suppose that "The Holy Ghost" of the Christian Religion probably refers to a similar force). This energy is part of every living being. It circulates inside our bodies, and it can be absorbed from our surroundings and transferred to ourselves or other beings.
But when we speak about Reiki today we usually refer to a healing technique, which was originally developed by Dr. Mikao Usui who lived in Japan by the end of the 19th century.
Everybody has probably heard of people who can heal other people (or at least make them feel better) by just putting their hands on them.
Though basically every one of us has this natural ability, more or less distinctively, most of us have lost it completely due to our busy modern life.
That is why we need something that helps us restore this ability, trigger the flow and teach us how to absorb and transfer the energy. And that's what the symbols used in Reiki do.
Some people also see Reiki as a method of spiritual development. It's a fact that when you receive regular Reiki treatments - and even more when you take part in a seminar and learn how to give Reiki to yourself and others - this does not only improve your physical health. The enhanced level of energy also has an influence on the mental side that shouldn't be underestimated.
Yet Reiki can only do for you what you allow it to do, so you'll never lose control!
But if you want a change in your life, Reiki can be very helpful. You can see what it's done to me on the "About Myself" page...

Little is known about Dr. Mikao Usui, but it is quite certain that he wasn't a Doctor of Medicine though he healed many people later in his life. Some people speculate that he probably was some high administration official as he had the possibility to travel and must have also had access to secret documents. Some also say he was a Japanese born Christian monk.
There are many legends about how he discovered Reiki. One of them says that he was asked by one of his pupils how Jesus used to heal. He could not answer this question, but it never left him alone and so he tried to find out. He never found the answer. But instead he found the way in which the Buddha healed - Reiki!
Another legend says that the 4 symbols used in the Reiki System were revealed to him during a retreat in the mountains of Kuriyama. Whatever is true, somehow he did discover (or rather re-discover) those symbols. He spent the rest of his life teaching Reiki all over Japan and doing treatments.
Later he introduced some directions for life into his system of Reiki:
Just for Today Do not worry, Accept
Just for today, do not anger.
Honour your parents, teachers and elders
Earn your living honestly
Show gratitude to all living things.
The system of the 3 degrees was not officially introduced at that time, but Dr. Usui used to give what later was called the First Degree (which allows you to treat yourself and others) to anyone who wanted it and the Second one (which reveals 3 of the 4 symbols and - for example - allows you to send Distance Reiki) to only a few.
But only to sixteen of his pupils he revealed the fourth symbol (today called the "Master Symbol" though they did not talk of "Masters" at that time) which allows you to initiate other people.
One of them was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi who went on with developing the Usui System of healing in his own health clinic in Tokyo. He created the standard hand positions, the system of three degrees and their initiation procedures.
Dr. Hayashi initiated 13 Reiki Masters. The last one of them was Mrs. Hawayo Takata.
Mrs. Takata was a Japanese Hawaiian who went to Japan to find healing from different serious conditions. After she was healed in Dr. Hayashi's clinic in Tokyo she became his pupil. Later Mrs. Takata brought Reiki back to the United States and founded a health clinic in Hawaii. She also made Reiki a commercial system and became very prosperous.
Mrs. Takata only started to initiate other masters when she was already in her seventies. She initiated 22 masters.
Today Reiki has spread all over the world.
Unfortunately after the death of Mrs. Takata in 1980 it has split into several directions, some of which severely oppose each other, each one claiming "The true Reiki" for itself. Some strictly follow the original system that Dr. Usui and Dr. Hayashi founded. Others have made modifications to the original system to "better it" and up to 20 new "Grand Master" grades have been added.
You have to decide for yourself if this really is for the better...
As already mentioned before Reiki is known as a healing technique. Why it does heal, nobody knows for sure. Holistic healers believe that besides our physical body we all own a second, energetic body, the so-called "astral body". This is where Reiki works. The astral body is an image of the physical body - and vice versa. So healing that takes place on the astral body will manifest in the physical body also. Another theory is that Reiki removes eventual blockages in the energy system of the body and balances the Chakras.
But whatever the reason is - it's a fact that I've
had results that were surprising even to myself. The father of a close
friend who suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary desease was
already in the process of dying when I started sending him Distance
Reiki. Immediately after the first treatment he was able to breathe on
his own again. He recovered completely and was even able to work again,
and he lived for another few years.
I am convinced that this can't be a coincidence even though I'd never claim that I healed him. He had a strong will to live - and it looks like Reiki just provided him with the extra kick of energy that he needed to make it.
Yet healing can and must NEVER be promised! This is very important!!!
There may be several reasons why a healing fails.
If the client is very ill or has been ill for a long time, the
damages in the physical body may be so advanced that they just can't be repaired in time even if the energetic blockages that caused them are removed.
Hidden in a client's unconscious mind there may also be reasons why he holds on to a certain medical condition, even if it causes him pain. For an example his desease may get him more attention from the people around him. Maybe he needs some time-out from unpleasant circumstances that are just too much for him to bear.
Or maybe it's just his fate that he has to deal with ill health in his life....
All a Reiki practitioner can do is provide the client with an extra portion of energy which he is going to make use of in any way that he wants or can.
It is still proven that even a client who is
terminally ill does benefit from Reiki treatments, because they take away some of the pain and make it easier on him to accept his fate
and let go.
Please note: Reiki treatments should NEVER EVER replace a conventional medical treatment, though they are ideal as a supporting measure.
If you have a health condition, see your doctor first for approval!
And please don't even think of stopping your conventional therapy because now you're getting Reiki treatments. I MUST object to this!!!
I personally see the benefit of Reiki primarily in the field of prevention.
The enhancement of your level of energy, combined
with the deep relaxation during a Reiki treatment, belong to the best
things that a stressed person can experience in our modern
world!
If you want to get into contact with the Reiki energy you've got the choice:
- either you can see a Reiki practitioner, preferably a Master, and enjoy a treatment.
- or you have the possibility to attend a seminar and learn how to give Reiki to yourself and others.
